Frontier Troubleshooting Tips

Having trouble connecting to your Frontier internet? Wondering if there’s a mass outage or just a troubleshooting issue? We’ve got you covered.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to do when there’s an issue with your Frontier internet connection, so you can get your internet back up and running as soon as possible.

Frontier Speed Test to gauge performance

If your internet connection is spotty or lagging, we recommend you conduct a speed test to see your download and upload speeds, latency, and ping rates. This will let you know the baseline of whether your internet is running as quickly and smoothly as it should be.

For instance, if you have a 100 Mbps plan and your download speed shows up as significantly less than that, you know you need to strengthen your connection or update your devices.

Troubleshoot common Frontier Internet issues

If your internet connection isn’t as fast or smooth as it should be, there are several troubleshooting methods you can conduct to hopefully fix the issue.

1. Restart your router and modem

  • Unplug your router and modem for about 30 seconds, then plug them back in.
  • Allow the devices a few minutes to fully restart.
  • This can help refresh the connection and clear temporary issues.

2. Check for interference

  • Ensure your router is placed in a central location away from walls, floors, and other electronic devices that might cause interference.
  • Place the router in an elevated position if possible.

3. Check for bandwidth hogs

  • Disconnect or pause downloads and streaming on other devices using the network.
  • High-bandwidth activities like video calls, gaming, or large downloads can slow down your connection.

4. Update firmware and drivers

  • Check if your router has any firmware updates and install them if available.
  • Also, ensure your computer or device’s network drivers are up-to-date.

5. Try a wired connection

  • Connect your device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
  • If the wired connection is significantly faster, the issue may be with your Wi-Fi signal.

6. Clear browser cache

  • A full browser cache can slow down internet speeds.
  • Go to your browser settings and clear the cache and cookies.

7. Adjust quality settings

  • If you’re streaming or gaming, lowering the quality settings can reduce buffering and lag.

8. Fiber internet customers: Restart your ONT

  • For Fiber internet users, restart or check the power of your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). Learn how here.
