Portland: A Technology, Education, and Food Hub

Fun fact: Douglas Engelbart, who invented the computer mouse, was born in Portland, Oregon.

Though Portland’s official nickname is the “City of Roses” due partly to its annual rose festival that started in 1907, the greater Portland area is often referred to as the “Silicon Forest.” Anchored by the Intel Corporation in nearby Hillsborough, the Portland area has deep technology roots. Tektronix, which makes oscilloscopes, and video and mobile test protocol equipment, got its start in Portland. Today, companies like Ruby Receptionists, Treehouse, and Survey Monkey carry on the Portland startup tradition.

That startup tradition sets the expectation for fast, reliable Internet from Portland Internet providers. With work/life balance a key aspect of many Portland-area companies, the freedom to work from home is all the more enjoyable with a FiOS Internet connection from Frontier. A Frontier FiOS connection gives you the bandwidth to collaborate with coworkers, jump on a conference call with a client, and stream your groove-to music while you work.

Portland is also home to Lewis & Clark College and Reed College. Yes, that Reed College, the one where Steve Jobs audited the calligraphy class that influenced the Macintosh computer, “the first computer with beautiful typography,” as Jobs said in his 2005 Stanford commencement address. And let’s not forget Reed alumnus and Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger. It’s no wonder that 1,400 undergraduates from across the country, and around the world, attend Reed College and expect FiOS Internet speeds to launch their own projects and keep them connected with family back home.

It isn’t just its technological roots that make Portland a hotbed for innovation. It also has a rich foodie history. Portland, after all, is the birthplace of James Beard. You may not know the man, but you may know the James Beard Award, presented for excellence in cuisine, culinary writing, and culinary education. Portland’s own Naomi Pomeroy, who opened Beast, won the James Beard Award for best Northwest Chef in 2014, while Gabriel Rucker of Le Pigeon, won in 2013. Portland’s James Beard Award showing dates back to 1998.

If I could I would put no stars! Customer service is terrible! I spent 2 days over the las 2 weeks home waiting for my scheduled installation with no one ever showing up or calling to inform me that they couldn't make it. Have had to call my self multiple times requesting communication and no one from dispatch or customer support or supervisor calling me back. Very poor service and no one takes responsibility. Still have not received a call regarding my installation date reschedule.
